Operational Technology Security
Engineered based on content and not context(deterministic in nature) , common in industrial control systems(ICS) such as SCADA Systems, purpose-built to achieve automation for specific industrial applications. They connect over industrial protocols that are never used on IT networks (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet), they lack security tools (firewalls, antivirus), and they are also designed differently than “normal” computers. Since OT has fewer gateways, it is considered more secure. However, the risk of a compromised physical device is usually greater than that of a data breach.
